In the Beginning… Parties were held at the original Fools’ Guild Hall at 8228 Fountain Avenue, West Hollywood, beginning with Halloween in 1980, and followed by casual parties celebrating New Years Eve, April Fools Day, post-Renaissance Faire every June, as well as improvised, theatrically-inspired events which now live only as blurry memories. There was no “king” that first year. Andy Davis proclaimed himself King in 1981 (Anonymous I). Andy was followed by Dennis Day (the Mother King 1982-3), Q Siebenthal (Easy Off 1983-4) and Billy Scudder (1984-5). During Billy Scudder’s reign, the April 1st “Feast of Fools” was somewhat formalized. A core group had a sit-down feast, which was followed later that evening by an open-invitation party. During the reign of Greg Dean (Obscene Juggler 1985-6), a MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S REVELS party kicked off the “SUMMER O’ FUN,” several months of workshops, film nights and casual performances culminating in HALLOWEEN. The Feast that year, called ALL FOOLS NIGHT, moved to the top-floor ballroom at the Variety Arts Center in downtown Los Angeles. The following King, Adam Long (Rex Marks the Spot 1986-7) also had his FEAST OF FOOLS at the Variety Arts Center ballroom. Alan Katz’ famed painting commemorating the early Feasts made its debut at the Variety Arts Center ballroom, but it was so massive that it would not fit in the building’s stairways or elevators; it was wrapped in blankets and pulled up the outside of the building with ropes. There is no documentation for parties thrown during the reign of Jack Albee (Feniculee of Farts Esq 1987-8) except for the ITALIAN AF-FAIRE in June, which may have been the final event at the Guildhall. Coincidentally 1988 was the final year of the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in its Paramount Ranch, Agoura location. When the Faire moved to Devore the following year, the event lost many of its Fools Guild participants. The Fools thereafter threw their parties in a variety of locations, which lacked the eccentricity of the old Guildhall. This gave rise to themes that inspired the group to decorate (and dress) in creative ways.
