Who Leads a Fool?
The Fools Guild is led by
the King of Fools. Perhaps a more accurate term would be
"monarch," because the King can be either male or female.
But we like the word "King" better. "Monarch of Fools" just
doesn't have the same ring.
The King is sort of like the
Chieftan of a tribe: part figurehead, part administrator,
part love object. He or she typically makes all major
decisions, produces all events, bears all responsibility,
and supposedly total royal authority: that is authority over
decisions no one else wants to make.
Originally the King of Fools
was appointed in recognition of being an excellent comic
performer. The role of Mother Folly represented the
non-performing, feminine side of the Fool. However with the
passing of time, our reasoning faculties have diminished and
we really don't know why we do what we do (whatever that
is). Who writes this sh*t anyway?
Inevitably almost every King of Fools has a nervous
breakdown. That's why we choose a new King every year. The
ex-Kings get together with the current King around April or
May and determine who the next King shall be. Sometime in
the late spring or early summer, the new King is crowned in
a very illustrious coronation ceremony before the thronging
masses of subjects. The coronation usually takes place at a
Renaissance Faire in southern California and is preceded by
a massive Parade of Fools, in search of the new
King.
